Here is a little bit about how panoramic photos are created.
In the most basic sense...
Panoramic photos are made by merging multiple photos together into one.
In a bit more detail...
Taking multiple photos of a scene/view, making sure to rotate the camera around the nodal point of the lens and with fixed exposure settings.
Then copying the photos to your computer and using special software to stitch/merge them together in to one long image.

It sounds pretty simple, and for small panoramics it actually is! However, when you start stitching large amounts of photos together or create a 360 degree immersive panoramic, it gets a little more complicated.
